An Iron Removal Plant (IRP) is a water treatment system designed to remove excess iron, manganese, and suspended particles from raw water sources such as bore wells, tube wells, and surface water. High iron levels in water cause reddish-brown stains on clothes, plumbing, and fixtures, and may lead to unpleasant taste and odor.
Working Principle
1. Oxidation:
Dissolved ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) is converted into ferric iron (Fe³⁺) by aeration or chemical oxidation.
2. Filtration:
Water passes through specialized filter media (such as manganese dioxide, Birm, or sand) that traps ferric iron and other impurities.
3. Backwashing:
Periodic backwashing flushes out the accumulated iron particles, ensuring efficient operation and long filter life.
